今日はラグビー誕生200年記念日！ Today is the 200-year birthday of the game of rugby

Just 200 years ago William Webb Ellis took the ball in his arms and ran with it on The Close at Rugby School. This is considered to be the origin of rugby, and Ellis' name became the name for the trophy, the Webb Ellis Cup, awarded to the winner of the Rugby World Cup.

200年前の今日イングランドのラグビー校のグランドで、ウィリアム・ウェブ・エリス少年がフットボールの試合中に球を抱えて走り出したのが、ラグビーの起源とされています。ラグビーW杯の優勝トロフィは、彼の名前にちなんで「ウエブ・エリス・カップ」と言われています。来月にはフランスでラグビーワールドカップが開催されます。桜ジャージの日本チームの活躍が今から楽しみです！
